The Cube™ 6-DoF Vibration Test System

The usage of 6-DOF shaker tables allows for significant shock testing and vibration testing results. Multiaxis measurements of an operational environment can be employed in the derivation of multiaxis inputs, thereby improving the accuracy of test specifications that excite representative stress states and failure modes in a test article. 6-DOF testing allows for a more representative, multiaxis test environment to be applied to a test article. It also allows for off-axis inputs to be controlled and minimized for traditional single-axis test methodologies.

With a history of more than 35 CUBE™ installations since 1994, Team Corporation has taken 6 Degree of Freedom testing capability to new levels. An advanced technology hydraulic test system that offers 6 Degrees of Control, the CUBE™ can accurately replicate virtually any vibration environment, including very high frequencies, with precise digital control.

The CUBE™ simulates real-world 6 Degree of Freedom vibration with complete, simultaneous control of the amplitude and phase of all 6 Degrees of Freedom. Offering simultaneous or sequential excitation of test articles in Sine, Random, and Time Wave Form Replication, the CUBE™ sets the standard for multi-axis vibration testing.

Multi DOF Vibration System

A random vibration test most commonly validates the reliability of a device. The test generates a power spectral density (PSD) that indicates the resonances across a specific frequency range.

Random vibration tests that are shorter in duration usually have extremely tight tolerances. The calculations of averaging fast Fourier transform (FFT) power values limit the possibility that all lines will be within tolerance quickly. Degrees of freedom (DOF) calculations are a statistically valid way to provide smooth lines and an in-tolerance PSD in a brief testing period.

Random vibration test specifications are likely to include a DOF value. Statistical DOF help define confidence intervals and the probability of meeting tolerance. Statistical degrees of freedom are relevant when conducting random vibration tests. This property results from an averaged random power spectral density computation using the fast Fourier transform.

The average power spectral density of a waveform is a chi-squared random variable with (2*F) DOF, where F is the frame of time data. Thus, equations that define the chi-squared distribution can compute the confidence intervals and the probability of meeting tolerance.

Six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) shock and vibration testing provides a means for improved mechanical qualification of a system or component. This testing permits an input that is more indicative of realistic operational environments. Therefore, 6-DOF testing results in a more relative stress state to be stimulated in a test article. Furthermore, accurate 6-DOF analysis is critical to testing. This analysis is a valuable tool for improving 6-DOF testing methods and recovering unmeasured quantities from related test inputs.
