Seismic Testing

Seismic testing, also commonly referred to as earthquake testing, is conducted to replicate earthquake conditions while examining the future effects on equipment in those conditions. Different industries use several standards to govern seismic testing. Testing involving telecommunications uses Network Building Equipment Systems (NEBS) guidelines.

IEEE 344 standards define test requirements for safety-related equipment in nuclear power plants. Tests like these are required to indicate that equipment can perform competently during and following a safe shutdown event when an earthquake occurs. Another recent earthquake test is the ICC-ES ACC 155 test, which determines acceptance criteria for nonstructural components.

GR-63 test requirements encompass minimum spatial and environmentally natural standards for all new telecommunications instruments used in climate-controlled spaces. The Telcordia-NIS and other industry representatives jointly developed these criteria specific to these applications. They apply to:

  • Switch and transport systems.
  • Interconnection and distribution frames.
  • Operations support systems.
  • Cable entrance facilities.
  • Associated cable distribution systems
  • Other power equipment.

Compliance with these requirements may increase network productivity, ease equipment installation, and enhance the economic planning, engineering, and operation of equipment spaces.

Shaker Table Testing

The shaker table test is one of the most widely used techniques to assess the seismic performance of structures made of various materials. Commonly, software for earthquake analysis evaluates linear/nonlinear and elastic/inelastic dynamic responses of structures.

This testing uses a device designed for shaking building components, scaled slopes, or structural models with a wide range of simulated ground movements, including reproductions of recorded earthquakes time-histories.

Analysis from shake table testing builds a well-structured seismic certification program to reduce potential testing requirements or cover unique mounting configurations. The mounting surface on our NEBS-GR63 Seismic Simulation Test System measures 48 inches by 48 inches. Multiple types of waveforms and field data calculate test input motion to achieve the required response. Our earthquake analysis software ensures extensive, accurate data from each test.

Seismic vibration refers to structural vibration on piping, machinery housings, machine support structures, and bearing housings. This testing is particularly suitable for machinery with rolling-element bearings. These bearings will generally convey both shaft and bearing-related vibrations to the outside of the machine where seismic measurements can be detected.
